KEY POINTS:
Raglan Harbour was yesterday closed to swimmers after a sewage spill.
Waikato District Council community assets group manager Richard Bax said the sewage pump station at Marine Parade, Raglan, overflowed into the estuary due to an electrical fault.
The area around the overflow has been inspected and water samples have been collected for analysis. A clean up was due to be completed today, Mr Bax said.
Warning signs advise the public not to swim or gather shellfish until test results come back clear.
Environment Waikato duty manager Rob Dragten said it would be at least 24 hours before test results were known.
"We will continue to monitor the water on a daily basis until water quality returns to normal." Mr Dragten said it was not yet known how much sewage had spilled into the harbour.
