KEY POINTS:
The MetService tonight issued the following warning:
A deep low is passing south of New Zealand this evening with an associated cold front crossing the South Island overnight.
Southwesterly gales are expected to spread into coastal areas of Southland, Otago and Canterbury. These winds could reach severe gale for a time, with possible gusts of 120 kilometre/h in exposed coastal areas of Southland and Otago as well as Banks Peninsula through to Friday evening.
Winds of this strength can cause damage to trees and insecure structures, as well as making driving hazardous.
Snow showers are also likely down to unseasonably low levels. This, combined with strong winds, will make for bitterly cold temperatures.
People in these areas, especially trampers, farmers and travellers should take the necessary precautions.
