A severe weather warning has been issued for Fiordland, as heavy rain is set to pound the region for the next 24 hours, before moving on to other parts of the South Island.
Metservice this morning issued the warning for Fiordland as a front moved across the South Island, bringing with it heavy northwesterly rain.
It was predicted that 150mm of rain could fall in the region from 2pm today until 4pm tomorrow.
The front would then move slowly northwards, again bringing strong northwesterly winds and periods of rain to the South Island until Sunday morning.
The heaviest rain was expected to be in the Westland ranges during this time, where 500mm of rain could fall.
