KEY POINTS:
MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the top half of the North Island.
It is expected to roll in between now and 8pm over eastern Northland thorough to the northern parts of Taupo.
Weather Ambassador Bob McDavitt says the thunderstorm will be slow moving. He says up to 25 to 40 millimetres of rain could fall per hour.
Mr McDavitt says rainfall at that intensity could cause surface or flash flooding, especially in low lying areas. He says it could also lead to landslips.
