A severe quake off the south coast of the country shook awake a handful of residents in the South Island late last night.
GeoNet said the 5.1-magnitude quake was "severe".
It hit about 11pm and had a depth of 13km, located 145km west of Tuatapere in Southland.
People in Christchurch and Franz Josef recorded feeling the quake as well as three people in Invercargill.
There have been no reports of damage.
North Islanders have reported feeling the quake on Twitter this morning.
