Severe gales to hit Canterbury

Severe gales are expected to hit Canterbury around midday as a front crawls up the South Island.

It was expected to bring heavy rain and winds up the South Island , with strong northwesterlies hitting Wellington and Wairarapa this evening.

The MetService said anyone planning outdoor activities should keep up with the latest forecasts and be wary of rapidly rising rivers.
