KEY POINTS:
Several teenagers have been hospitalised after a car smashed into a lamp post in a suspected boy racer incident last night.
A spokesman from the Lion Foundation rescue helicopter said it appeared two cars, believed to have been racing each other, came into contact on a hill on State Highway 1, north of Taupo, about 10.15pm.
A red Nissan Skyline lost control before hitting the lamp post.
A 16-year-old Taupo girl was flown to Rotorua Hospital with serious head, abdominal and leg injuries and a 16-year-old boy was also flown to Rotorua with serious multiple injuries.
Other passengers were taken to hospital in Taupo with a range of less serious injuries.
Taupo police confirmed there were four people in one car and just the driver in the second car.
It appeared both cars were heading north in separate lanes when one vehicle suddenly turned right, across the path of the second car.
Both cars were extensively damaged.
