KEY POINTS:
Security camera footage helped police arrest seven male youths following a vicious beating of a teenager in Mt Maunganui overnight.
Senior Sergeant Rob Glencross said the youths piled out of a van on Marine Parade and beat another youth who was walking on the street.
He said the victim, who it appeared some of the arrested youths knew, was beaten and then kicked after falling to the ground and was fortunate not to have been more seriously injured.
"The CCTV cameras there are of a very high quality and it allowed us to identify the alleged offenders very well," Mr Glencross told NZPA.
"We were able to react very quickly and though the assault wasn't still going, the alleged offenders were still at the scene when we arrived."
Seven people, aged 15 to 20, are expected to appear in court in Tauranga tomorrow.
