Fifteen families were each handed the New Zealand Defence Service Medal at an Auckland ceremony yesterday on behalf of deceased ex-service personnel.
The ceremony was held at the Royal New Zealand Navy Museum at Devonport, and was opened by Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman, who presented the medals to the families.
The medals recognise New Zealanders who served in the armed forces for more than three years since the end of World War II, and those who completed their compulsory military training or national military service obligations.
Beryl Caldwell, 82, received the medal on behalf of her late husband Corporal Walter Callis, who served in the Army Service Corps as a driver until 1963. She said it was a "very emotional" experience.
Her son, Tony, had applied for the medal in August last year. Daughter, Tina, said service personnel like her late father "could not be honoured highly enough".
