An Australian tramper with a serious lower leg injury was lifted off the Motatapu Track near Wanaka late on Tuesday afternoon.
The man was in a group of five walking the track.
The group set off a personal locator beacon, which alerted the Rescue co-ordination Centre.
A Southern Lakes helicopter located the group soon afterwards and a paramedic treated the man at the scene before he was winched on board and flown to Queenstown's Frankton Hospital.
