The Catholic Bishop of Christchurch Bishop Barry Jones is seriously ill and has been transferred to palliative care, the Diocese of Christchurch revealed today.
The church said Bishop Jones had been admitted to palliative care after suffering a series of strokes and more recently a heart attack. It said he was currently "failing".
His family had gathered to be with him.
Bishop Jones was appointed in May 2007.
