Serious injury at recycling depot

An employee, aged in his 50s, was taken to Wairarapa Hospital after suffering a serious injury at Masterton's Transfer Station and Recycling Depot.

A Wairarapa man has been flown to hospital after a serious work injury at Masterton's Transfer Station and Recycling Depot.

The Earthcare Environmental employee, aged in his 50s, was taken to Wairarapa Hospital on Wednesday and then transferred to Lower Hutt by rescue helicopter.

Yesterday he was still in the hospital's plastics unit in a stable condition.

WorkSafe was notified about the incident and has been making initial inquiries, with an inspector attending the Nursery Rd site yesterday.

Masterton District Council, which owns the depot and contracts out the operation of the site to Earthcare Environmental, is awaiting the findings of the investigation.

"Our thoughts are with the person concerned and his family and colleagues at this distressing time," council spokesman Sam Rossiter-Stead said.

Earthcare Environmental did not return calls yesterday.
