The woman driver involved in a high-speed collision with a milk tanker on Monday is in a serious condition in intensive care.
The Masterton woman, 65, had been airlifted to Wellington Hospital on Monday morning after the car she was driving collided head-on with a southbound Fonterra truck, near West Taratahi, on SH2 between Masterton and Carterton.
Passers-by had been first at the scene and had comforted the woman, who had been trapped in her vehicle, before two fire crews worked for at least 20 minutes to extricate her from the mangled wreckage.
The truck driver was shaken but unharmed and traffic was diverted until the afternoon, as emergency crews cleared the scene of crash debris.
