Recidivist burglar and thief Andrew Peter Holmes has asked for a psychological assessment to work out why he behaves as he does.
The 42-year-old is now in custody awaiting sentence at the Rangiora Court House on July 29 on yet another burglary charge after his guilty plea at a Christchurch District Court session inside the men's prison today.
According to defence counsel Colin Eason he has more than 180 convictions on his record and had asked to be assessed to find out why he behaves in that way.
Judge Noel Walsh totalled 98 dishonesty convictions - thefts, including shoplifting and car break-ins, as well as burglaries - on the list which extends back 26 years. The latest was a two-month jail term imposed in January for a theft from a car.
"The only respite the community has had is when you have been locked up in prison," he said.
The judge granted Holmes' request and asked for a pre-sentence report and the psychological report in time for the sentencing.
Police prosecutor Paul Scott said Holmes was living in Barbadoes Street and on March 3 he went to a fish shop nearby where he broke in and took food, a Barnadoes charity box, and two watches.
Police spotted him and found him with the stolen gear, as well as a jemmy bar, screwdriver, and a head-light.
"You are clearly a serial burglar and thief," said the judge.
