Sentries are stationed on the Auckland Harbour Bridge to prevent incidents during the Rugby World Cup.
Yesterday, four security guards sat on the bridge walkways watching traffic flow across the main link between downtown Auckland and the North Shore.
Auckland Transport spokesman Ewart Barnsley declined to provide details about why the guards had been deployed to their perches high above the Waitemata Harbour but said that it was a preventive measure.
"They are there to make sure the highway stays open ... it's extra security for the Rugby World Cup, I can't go into any detail," Barnsley said.
He said motorists should not be alarmed by the security guards.
