Wairarapa United produced their best performance since joining the central league football competition last season when they thrashed Petone 6-1 at Hullena Park, Masterton on Saturday.
It was a superb all-round effort from a Wairarapa side who had a clear ascendancy in a first half, at the end of which they led by 1-0, and then completely dominated the second, adding a further five goals to their tally while conceding only one.
''We couldn't have wished for anything better than that,'' delighted coach Phil Keinzley said.
''Quite honestly I can't remember anything better ever from a Wairarapa United side, men or women. It was outstanding.''
What pleased Keinzley most was the accuracy of Wairarapa's attacking play, with seven or eight passes being strung together as they looked to find holes in the Petone defence.
And generally those moves ended with a serious shot at goal, many of which found the back of the net.
Impressive too was the willingness of players to work hard off the ball, something which often saw the Petone defenders being lured away from the ball carrier. There was a surety about the home team's own defensive play, with Petone being able to create very few scoring chances.
Making the big win even more special was that it came at the same time defender Carl Shailer set a new record of 136 games for Wairarapa United's premier side. Another key player in Pita Rabo celebrated 100 games in their colours.
''Carl and Pita have been terrific servants for us and we really wanted to give them something extra to celebrate'' Keinzley said.
With Campbell Banks ruled out because of an appendix operation which could see him sidelined for up to six weeks, Seule Soromon and Andrew Abba combined up front for Wairarapa United and they were a threat throughout the game. Soromon scored four goals and Abba one. Rabo also got himself on the scoresheet.
Abba was officially named as Wairarapa United's player of the match but Keinzley said any of the players could have received the award.
In the Capital third division Douglas Villa beat leaders Island Bay at the Park Sportsground. Douglas Villa might have started as the rank underdogs but it didn't show on the field of play, with the home side dominating the scoring action and winning by 4-0.
Wairarapa United seconds also produced a goal scoring feast, winning 9-2 against Stokes Valley.
