Self belief will be a vital ingredient if Anderson Meats Wairarapa United are to beat Petone in their Chatham Cup knockout soccer match at Howard Booth Park, Carterton tomorrow.
That's the word from coach Phil Keinzley, pictured right, who wants his side to focus on the impressive form they showed in their 4-0 win over Marist Wellington in a Capital premier division match last weekend, rather than the 3-0 loss they suffered at the hands of Petone earlier in the season.
"We played badly against Petone last time, so there's no point on dwelling on that game," he said. "We have made a lot of progress since then and can go out there confident of doing well????without confidence we will have no show."
Keinzley believes an effort similar to that against Marist Wellington, where Wairarapa United scored three goals in the first half and another in the second when playing a man short, would have Petone fully stretched.
"We probably need to find another notch to beat them, but that's all," he said. "And I know we are capable of that."
One of Petone's greatest attributes is the tightness of their defence, but Keinzley says any team with the strike power of Wairarapa United had to rate a show of penetrating it, especially if they were prepared to be patient in their build-ups.
"We have to take our time, do things at our pace not theirs," he said. "We have plenty of players who can score goals, but we have to create space for them and that's where patience comes in."
At the same time though Keinzley is aware too that the flair on attack of players like strikers Pita Rabo and Sakeo Valevou needs to be utilised as well.
"It's a fine line really?? the balance of allowing them to use their natural skills, yet keeping the risk factor to a minimum," he said. "Retaining possession for long periods is so vital because it means they have less chance to score themselves." Keinzley sees a win tomorrow having a "double whammy" effect for Wairarapa United as they sit second on the premier division competition table six points ? or two wins ? in arrears of Petone and while no points are at stake here a loss would help create self doubt in their camp.
"Pyschologically it might take them down a peg or two and have them thinking that they aren't untouchable," he said. "And that could be all important as to whether we catch them or not."
The Wairarapa United line-up tomorrow is: Tony Jamieson, Robbie Bull, Andy Roberrtson, Petero Dauniseka, Murray Burling,Guiseppe Cagliari, James Oxtoby, Carl Shailer, Troy Burling,Pita Rabo, Sakeo Valevou.Subs: Aaron Spierling, Hayden Spierling .
