Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley has a selection quandary leading into his team's central league soccer playoff match with Maycenvale United at the Pugh Sports Bowl, Masterton on Sunday.
Keinzley named 10 players in his starting line-up yesterday with Aaron Spierling and Paul Gregory bracketed to join vice-captain Miriek Tvaroh in the role of central midfielder.
The coach himself declared the choice between Spierling and Gregory as a "very close call" likely to come down to how they handled the job expected off them when put through their paces at training tonight.
Keinzley was loathe to list exactly what that job would be in that it was something not tried in previous games this season and he hoped it would catch Maycenvale United off guard. But he did say it centred more around defence than attack.
"It's not going to change our normal attacking style of play & that won't happen," he said. "It's a tweaking of what we usually do defensively, that's all."
Spierling and Gregory played a big part in Wairarapa United's first-ever winning of the Capital premier division title this season, Spierling impressing with his fitness and speed and Gregory with his strength on the ball. Both of them are proven goal scorers as well.
Apart from the choice between those two the Wairarapa United starting line-up for Sunday very much picked itself.
The in-form Matt Borren will be in goal with Carl Shailer at left fullback, Waisake Sabutu and James Oxtoby as central fullbacks and Andy Robertson at right fullback.
Left half will be Anton Ross, Tvaroh will be in the centre of the midfield and Sakeo Valevou at right half.
Skipper Pita Rabo will, as usual, have a roaming commission between midfield and striker with the club's record goal scorer Seule Soromon in the latter position as well. On the reserve bench will be Guiseppe Cagliari, Anaru Te Rangi and Kota Maeno and whoever misses out between Spierling and Gregory.
Reflecting on the importance of Wairarapa United achieving a postive outcome from Sunday's game, Keinzley said attaining central league status had always been the prime objective when the club was first formed and this was clearly their best chance of achieving it.
"It's the highest league available to us and it would be something special if the Wairarapa soccer community was represented at that level," he said.
Wairarapa United's challenge for a central league spot does not rest solely, of course, on what happens on Sunday. They have a return game with Maycenvale United the following weekend and the team with the highest number of goals over the two matches will then go on to play the bottom side in the 2008 central league, Stop Out, also in a home and away series.
