Kings Seeds, which was fined for breaching biosecurity rules by smuggling illegal cucumber seeds into the country for sale, says it wasn't the only importer.
Director Gerard Martin, of Katikati, said that an Auckland seed saving group was promoting the gourmet sour gherkins, as they were renamed, as recently as last month.
"In 30 years of importing thousands of varieties of herb, flower and vegetable seed, this is the first time an error of judgment has been made for which a very costly price has been paid", Martin said.
A Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry spokesman said that other prosecutions would be considered if evidence on illicit imports of the seeds became available.
