Two security officers who have been guarding the Christchurch Town Hall and the Convention Centre areas for the last four to five weeks were held in custody overnight for not having correct Civil Defence identifications.
They were arrested last night and appeared in the Christchurch District Court held in the Rangiora Court House today.
Defence counsel Steven Rollo said the men had spent overnight in custody but there had been a significant misunderstanding and further inquiries were being made between the Christchurch City Council, which issued their identifications, and the Earthquake Commission.
He said the men were acting honestly with no intention of breaching the earthquake cordon.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Mark Berryman said that the matter may be withdrawn after inquiries had been made.
Judge John Strettell told Kevin William Duncan, 47, and Kura Mark Ngatipa, 37, that he was sorry they found themselves in this position, and that it sounded like they were the meat in the sandwich.
He then added it was a story they could tell their grandchildren about.
They were remanded at large to April 28 for the inquiries to be made.
