Work and Income is trialling new layouts at two of its offices in a bid to bolster security in the wake of the 2014 Ashburton shootings.
For the past three months, WINZ has done away with its traditional open-floor plan at its Wellington and Levin offices. It has instead used screens to partition areas.
Ministry of Social Development national commissioner Penny Rounthwaite said this would help to increase privacy and security.
"Our sites have been open plan for some time and we're hearing from our clients that the new arrangements make it feel more private, more personalised.
"When they're having an interview with their case manager they feel they can talk about what is going on in their lives and not have people overhear that."
