A gambling addict who stole more than $42,000 from her security firm employers has been sentenced to home detention and community work.
Arai Mihaka, 36, pleaded guilty Rotorua District Court yesterday to one representative charge of theft.
She stole 12 large amounts of money, totalling $42,880 from ADT Security while delivering cash to ATM machines around Rotorua.
Mihaka's lawyer Harry Edward told the court that her offending stemmed from her pokie machine gambling addiction.
"This woman is a first offender who has never had a foot inside a courtroom before."
Judge James Weir sentenced her to nine months' home detention and 200 hours community work.
He ordered her to receive ongoing treatment and prohibited her from drinking alcohol or taking illegal drugs during her home detention period.
