A security guard was shot from a car with an air gun in what police say was a "callous and unprovoked attack" in Lower Hutt last night.
Police said the guard was patrolling the Rata Street Primary School in Naenae when a silver four-door car pulled up about 9pm.
He was then shot in the hand with an air gun.
The 22-year-old guard was awaiting surgery in Hutt Hospital to remove the pallet from his hand.
Detective Grant Carroll said the incident was a "callous and unprovoked attack".
