Wairarapa United seconds battled their way to a 3-2 victory over Gardner Electrical Masterton in their Capital third division football match at Howard Booth Park, Carterton, on Sunday and the title is theirs for the taking.
So depleted were the Wairarapa United stocks leading into the game they had to utilise the rule which allows them to use players from the club's Central League side which was due to face Miramar Rangers straight afterwards and Adam Cowan and Waisake Sabatu were part of their defensive line-up, Cowan netting the winning goal after the scores were level at 2-2.
Wairarapa United seconds head the competition table with 37 points and have just two games to play, Wainuiomata this coming weekend and White Swan Greytown. By picking up one point from either games they will complete the coveted quinella, promotion to second division next year and the third division title.
Masterton and Greytown are sixth-equal on the points table with 16, Greytown having scored a good 3-0 win over Victoria University on Saturday.
