An Indian man visiting New Zealand has been named as the second victim of a car crash near Gisborne on Friday.
Ayjay Singh, 23, died when a blue Subaru Legacy WRX he was travelling in hit a concrete shed on the northern side of Makaraka, near Pilmer Rd about 9.45pm.
The crash threw a solid concrete block of stairs - attached to the small shed - 18 metres down the road, and also killed 15-year-old Gisborne girl Emma Green. Her funeral was held yesterday.
Gisborne police had to contact Interpol and the New Zealand High Commission to notify Mr Singh's family.
He had been in the country for just over a year and was living in Opotiki. He had no family here and it is understood a family member will visit to take his body back to India.
The 24-year-old driver, and the other two passengers, sisters aged 19 and 14, were still in a general ward at Gisborne Hospital this morning.
Senior Constable Cory Ubels of the police serious crash unit said they were still in the early stages of the crash investigation.
Police were looking at reports the car clipped another as it attempted to overtake near the Pilmer Rd intersection, before it went out of control and hit the shed.
Police were still hoping to hear from witnesses.
