Second suspicious fire in two weeks at Levin house

Levin police are seeking information about a distinctive blue petrol container used to light a fire at a Levin house early Monday morning.

It is the second fire at the Stuckey St property in the past two weeks and police said it was only good luck no-one has been injured or killed.

The alarm was raised at about 4.30am on Monday and firefighters called to the property found the front corner of the home alight. Firefighters doused the flames, but not before a front wall was damaged.

It appeared someone had started the fire beneath the corner of the property and a blue petrol can had been ignited and left at the scene.

Senior Sergeant Sarn Paroli said nobody was home when the fire was noticed. CIB staff are investigating.

The first fire at the address was on May 6 when a shed full of scrap metal behind the residential home was set alight. Police were already treating that fire as suspicious.

They were also investigating a possible link between the May 6 fire and a Mako Mako Rd fire, where a woodpile was set alight -- also late at night. The residents noticed it and called the fire service.

"We are keeping an open mind as to whether these fires are linked," Mr Paroli said.

Levin Fire Chief Lyndsay Walker said it was "disappointing" firefighters, who had responded to more than a dozen flood related calls on Friday and Saturday, had to attend another callout because of a thoughtless person's actions.

"It's disappointing for the occupant and the owner and firefighters because of the ongoing issues."
