A motorcyclist has been killed in a second crash on Dominion Rd in the central Auckland suburb of Mt Eden today.
Police confirmed there was a collision between a car and a motorcycle on Dominion Rd at about 1.20pm and the male motorcylist has died.
A female pillion passenger has been taken to hospital with moderate injuries, a St John's Ambulance spokesman says.
The occupants of the car are not believed to have been injured.
The accident was on a stretch of Dominion Rd between Lisnoe and Bellevue Ave, between the View Rd and Valley Rd intersection.
The car appeared to have been turning into Lisnoe Rd when it collided with the motorcycle, witnesses said.
A witness said she heard a large bang and rushed out to see the motorcyclist and pillion passenger on the ground.
Police are now moving to remove the man's body from the road, where it had been covered with tarpaulin.
A large section of the road is cordoned off.
Man charged after earlier crash
This afternoon's crash is the second accident on Dominion Rd today, after this morning's five-car pile-up.
Witnesses have expressed shock at another serious accident so close to and so soon after this morning's crash.
A man now faces a charge of driving while incapable after the earlier crash.
He is alleged to have hit four parked vehicles during a late morning incident near the intersection of Dominion Rd and Valley Rd.
The man was assessed by ambulance staff, but did not want further medical treatment, police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said.
Two other people were taken to hospital for observation.
An eye witness to the earlier crash says it happened when a car driving on the flush median strip at speeds of at least 100km/hr lost control after clipping a cyclist at about 10:50am.
It hit several cars and narrowly missed pedestrians before crashing into a parked car outside Hammer Hardware.
A woman had to be cut from her vehicle by emergency services after the accident.
Police were alerted at 10.52am and were told by witnesses that a car was driven in an "erratic and dangerous manner" before hitting other vehicles.
The driver was taken into custody by members of the Armed Offenders Squad, who happened to be in the area as part of a drug operation targeting the Hells Angels' gang headquarters in a nearby street.
Ralph Ingram, manager of the Videon video store on Dominion Road, was walking to a bank when the incident happened and he said it the fortunate that the consequences were not more severe.
"There were tons of people around," he said. "Luckily no one died."
Mr Ingram said he heard the sounds of a car braking and then something smashing.
"When I looked up, I saw a maroon car come screaming across the road and hit a white pick-up and bounce off," he said.
"There was more noise and then he smashed into a black Integra."
When the car came to a stop, passers-by went to check on the driver, who came out clutching a rugby ball and looked around, before shock appeared to set in and he sat down and started to cry.
