Police yesterday arrested a second man they say was involved in a violent attack on two officers in Central Otago at the weekend.
Constable Toni Velenski and Senior Constable Mike Colligan were injured when they were called to deal with a disturbance in Alexandra on Friday night.
Ms Velenski was punched several time in the face and head while being held by her hair and Mr Colligan was bitten in the arm.
A bar manager was also attacked when he went to the aid of the officers.
Mr Colligan has since returned to work while Ms Velenski is still recovering at home.
Peter James Diehl entered no plea when he appeared in Dunedin District Court on Saturday charged with aggravated assault on police, injuring with intent, assaulting a person assisting police, criminal damage and resisting arrest.
Southern district police communications manager Vivien Pullar said yesterday a second man involved in the incident, a 21-year-old from Alexandra, was arrested yesterday.
That man allegedly threw a can of pepper spray belonging to one of the officers beyond reach while the two constables were on the ground restraining Diehl.
The man is expected to appear in Alexandra District Court on Thursday charged with theft and obstruction.
Meanwhile a Whangarei police officer was allegedly bitten by a drunk woman as he took her to a police station early Sunday morning.
Earlier this year, two Whangarei officers were seriously assaulted, one having part of his lip bitten off and the other left with a broken nose.
