KEY POINTS:
A search is underway for a diver missing off the Timaru coast today.
The diver went missing about 3pm while diving from a fishing vessel near a wreck about 36km off the Timaru coast, Mid-south Canterbury police area commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said.
He said the diving party was believed to be ascending from 60 metres when one of the party disappeared.
Two rescue helicopters, a coastguard vessel and vessels from a local fishing fleet were on their way to search for the diver, a Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) spokesman said.
Weather conditions in the area are described as ideal.
The Timaru Port Company is assisting RCCNZ with coordinating the search.
The helicopters were arriving from Christchurch and Dunedin.
