A search is underway for possible victims of a boating accident after wreckage was found on Coromandel peninsula yesterday.
The wreckage of a small runabout was reported by a fisherman on rocks near Pauanui, on the eastern coast of the Coromandel peninsula, about 7.40pm.
Inspector Scott Webb of the police northern communications centre said it appeared the wreckage was relatively new.
There was no name on the boat, which was described as a red and white fibreglass 15 footer with a V8 motor. Tent and sleeping gear was located with the runabout.
