Search resumes for swimmer swept away at Piha Beach

• The search for a missing swimmer at Piha Beach will resume this morning.
• Police and Land Search and Rescue are conducting a shoreline search with helicopter support.
• One swimmer remains missing after a group was swept away in a rip yesterday.

The search for a missing swimmer after six people were swept away in a rip at Piha Beach in Auckland is resuming this morning.

The man has been missing since 4pm yesterday.

A police spokesperson said the shoreline would be searched around the Lion Rock and South Piha/Blue Pool area. and would be joined by Land Search and Rescue.

The Eagle helicopter would be monitoring the water from the sky “when possible”, with Land Search and Rescue on the ground.

“Police are liaising with the man’s family, and we will continue to provide updates.”

Yesterday, a Surf Lifesaving New Zealand (SLSNZ) spokesperson confirmed surf lifeguards from Piha and United North Piha were searching for a swimmer at the beach.

“At approximately 4pm surf lifeguards at Piha saw a group of swimmers who had been swept out to sea in a rip. A number of swimmers have been rescued and one remains missing.

“Piha, United North Piha and Karekare SAR squads have been deployed to help search for the missing man.”
