The ever-increasing popularity of poker in this country is likely to be reflected in a record number of entries for the New Zealand Open in Auckland next month.
The tournament's Main Event carries a guaranteed minimum prize pool of $50,000 - but that will increase as more entries come in.
"Even though most interest is in the Main Event, there are plenty of lead-up events that cost less to enter - so everyone gets the chance to be involved", said SkyCity casino's General Manager Operations, Ejaaz Dean.
Satellites begin Monday May 31 and build up to the Main Event on Queen's Birthday weekend. Entries for these preliminary tourneys range from just $20. The buy-in for the NZ Poker Open Main Event is $1,100.
Amongst the largely domestic-based players competing at SkyCity will be poker ambassadors Lee "Final Table" Nelson and Brooke Howard-Smith.
Nelson is New Zealand's greatest poker player, having won tournaments all around the world. Howard-Smith is a local TV personality and poker pro.
