A search has been launched for a man who went missing after he and a woman fell out of their kayaks while paddling off the north of Gisborne this afternoon.
The man, believed to be in his mid-20s, and the woman got into trouble about 1km from the beach near Turihaua Point.
A nearby boat rescued the woman but the man disappeared, police said.
The incident was reported to police at 4.40pm.
The Eastland Community Rescue helicopter, a plane and surf lifesaving boats from Wainui were this evening searching for the man, who was not wearing a life jacket.
