Emergency services are searching the Marlborough Sounds after a report of a microlight crashing in smoke.
A helicopter was in the area, but there has been no sign of an aircraft since a witness called in the report about 3.45pm, Inspector Murray Hurst of southern police communications said.
It was not known how long search would continue for.
