Wellington police are tonight combing Oriental Bay from the land, sea and air for a missing swimmer.
Inspector Ken Climo told NZPA someone had seen a man go into the water about 6.45pm but he failed to emerge.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was searching from the air, the Coastguard and the police launch from the water, and officers were combing the waterfront on foot.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Coastguard have been stood down however the police search will be continuing until midnight. If the man is not found, divers will take up the search tomorrow morning.
There has been no sign of the man.
