"In the photo, Katipa is seen wearing a black T-shirt with what appear to be hickeys covering the length of his neck," the Daily Mail said.
The image also attracted plenty of comments from followers of the Counties Manukau Police page.
One asked: "Did he get confused that a vacuum cleaner is for the floor, not his neck?"
Another said: "Someone find him ASAP I'm concerned for the welfare of his girlfriend - she must be hungry."
The police Facebook post is entitled: Have you seen Tonganui Katipa?
"Police have a number of warrants to arrest 17-year-old Tonganui Katipa on serious offences, including reckless driving, burglary, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and failing to stop for police," they said in the post.
"Tonganui is actively avoiding police and we believe he is hiding out with friends and his girlfriend possibly in Counties Manukau however he could be anywhere in Auckland.
"We would remind those assisting Tonganui to evade Police that this is illegal and you can be charged for this.
"Tonganui is described as being around 179cm and of solid build."
