KEY POINTS:
A search is under way for a missing 66-year-old tramper in the Cape Jackson area of Marlborough, which lies between Queen Charlotte Sound and Cook Strait.
Police said a man travelling with a group went back on a track to find a missing water bottle yesterday and has not been seen since.
He was lightly clothed and while well-equipped for the tramp he left gear behind when he went back to look for bottle.
The call came into police late last night and the search today is concentrating on an area where an item of clothing was found this morning.
There is poor radio reception in the isolated area.
