The search for the diver missing off Mana Island near Wellington has been suspended. Robert Hewitt, 38, failed to surface from a dive on Sunday afternoon. He is the brother of former All Black, Norm Hewitt.
Inspector John Spence says searchers stayed out for as long as they could last night and divers were in the water until almost nightfall. A helicopter and light plane covered a huge area, but were unsuccessful.
Mr Spence says the police dive squad may return to the scene later today, weather permitting.
Norm Hewitt says the family took a boat ride towards Mana Island yesterday afternoon where they said a karakia for his brother. He says the family is working together to support each other at what is a very difficult time.
