KEY POINTS:
The ground search for a man missing on Mt Aspiring has been abandoned because of bad weather.
Wanaka police Constable Mike Thomas said the search and rescue team were back for the day because the weather was getting slowly worse.
He said depending on weather conditions tonight they may send helicopters to look for the man.
Earlier Wanaka police search and rescue coordinator Sergeant Aaron Nicholson said, Alan Leslie Beck, 49, a New Zealander living in Melbourne, may have fallen on the mountain.
Mr Beck had been in a group of four who had camped out for two days at Bevan Col on the mountain because of bad weather.
He had left Bevan Col, on the shoulder of the Bonar Glacier, about 10.30am yesterday to search out a route down to the Matukituki Valley.
Members of his group had not heard from him at 1pm and a search and rescue team began looking for Mr Beck at 4.30pm.
Two local helicopters were also used to search for Mr Beck before nightfall yesterday, while a helicopter equipped with night vision gear searched between 11pm and 1am today.
Mr Nicholson said given the limited visibility when Mr Beck was moving yesterday and the difficult terrain, there was a high probability he had had a significant fall.
