Within hours of hearing of Sir Peter Blake's death, many New Zealanders were thinking of a fitting memorial to his life and achievements.
Some proposed renaming the Viaduct Harbour as Sir Peter Blake Harbour - an idea unofficially endorsed by Prime Minister Helen Clark. Auckland Regional Council chairman Philip Warren favoured a statue at the harbour.
Yachtsman Grant Dalton, speaking from Sydney's Volvo round-the-world race centre, said renaming the facility or putting up a statue were not enough for one of "our greatest heroes and statesmen". He hopes New Zealanders can donate to a "super trust" charity fund, with proceeds going towards youth yachting.
