Street patrols are running day and night in Kaikohe in an effort to catch a vicious pitbull-cross dog that attacked a man and woman.
The woman received arm injuries and extensive leg and feet injuries and the man received hand and leg injuries.
However, five days after the attacks, the dog has still not been seen.
Far North District Council animal control officers were alerted to a pitbull in Kaikohe yesterday morning but when found, it was the wrong dog.
"We have had a few calls and we are reacting to all calls," council communications officer Rick McCall said.
The council was now considering the possibility the dog's owner had taken it out of the area, or that the dog may be dead.
The dog wasn't known in the area, Mr McCall said. "It's either recently been brought in or it's wandered in from somewhere else."
