KEY POINTS:
Forest and Bird is worried that an estimated 15 New Zealand sea lions have been killed in the first two weeks of the southern squid fishery season.
The figures come from the Ministry of Fisheries. The government has set a limit of 93 deaths and once that figure is reached, the season will be called off.
Forest and Bird says the quota is too high, given that the New Zealand sea lion only has an adult breeding population of five thousand.
