Con artists that police have described as "scumbags" are trying to take advantage of storm-battered Northland residents, police say.
Some Far North residents have reported receiving phone calls claiming to be from the group "Storm Relief Charity" and asking people for their account and pin numbers, Houhora police wrote on their Facebook page.
"Luckily and rightfully so the ones I know of that have received calls have told them where to go in no uncertain terms," the post said.
"I can assure you all that NO legitimate outfit would ever ask you for those details! They are simply scumbags hoping to use this opportunity to fleece what they can from our community and our people that are already struggling!"
If the scammer's phone number showed up on a potential victim's phone, they were urged to take the number down and report it to Houhora police.
