Screening introduced for suicide

A screening tool for detecting mental disorders and suicide risk among prisoners is winning national attention after successful tests.

The Corrections Department has tried its new screening method in Auckland and Christchurch prisons before introducing it nationally.

Public Prisons Service general manager Phil McCarthy said some prisoners were determined to harm themselves but staff made every effort to identify them.
