Jake Williams was sitting talking to a friend last night when he heard a loud bang followed by the sound of a tree crashing to the ground.
The Massey delivery man rushed to his front yard to find a blue Subaru Legacy had crashed through his front fence, sideswiping his own car before slamming into a tree. As the Subaru started to burn Mr Williams rushed to find a hose.
"By the time I got the hose ... [the driver] was gone."
Neighbour Rob Blackthorne said he heard the Subaru "screaming" along the road before crashing. He said the driver ran away down the road.
"I went after him and he was slowly coming back up the hill."
