Three scrap metal cars caught fire behind Collins D & J Auto Services on Fitzherbert St, Featherston, yesterday.
Featherston fire brigade were called to the scene just before 5pm.
Chief fire officer Colin McKenna said it took two trucks with about eight firefighters 15 minutes to put out the blaze, which was caused by sparks.
"He was doing a bit of cutting and some of the sparks got into the grass," Mr McKenna said.
Three scrap metal cars and about 10 square metres of grass caught fire.
