Convicted double murderer Scott Watson and the woman he married in prison have separated after allegations he was "two-timing" her with a woman he met behind bars.
Mother-of-four Coral Watson (nee Branch) married Watson in a highly publicised service at Paremoremo Prison in May 2004 after being introduced to him five years earlier through a mutual friend.
The marriage has never been consummated.
Watson was jailed in September 1999 for the murders of Ben Smart, 21, and Olivia Hope, 17, who disappeared in the Marlborough Sounds on New Year's Eve 1997. He is not eligible for parole until 2015.
Coral Watson confirmed to the Herald on Sunday "we have both moved on and hadn't spoken in a while. I have spent too many nights crying my eyes out over what he has done. I will never trust another man again in my life. I am now destined to spend the rest of my life alone."
She had called things off with Watson earlier this year after no longer being able to tolerate her husband's constant philandering.
The news of another woman came when she was dealing with publicity over her husband using a mobile phone to send explicit photos of himself to strangers from his prison cell.
"I caught him out with [another woman]. He lied. Another inmate's wife saw me in the supermarket and told me about it. I moved my kids and everything down there [to Christchurch from her home in Rotorua] and then I discover he's been carrying on behind my back.
"At the end of the day, there's not much I can do about it.
"My husband is a gigolo. He has had women write to him over the years and it has been something shocking and I have stood by him through thick and thin."
She said they had agreed to marriage counselling, but Watson had not made good on the promise. Instead, she claimed, he said he would never give her a divorce. "He cannot be seen to be giving me a divorce. What would the public think about that?"
Her children, she said, were the real victims of Watson's "carry-on". They thought of Watson as their dad and "still today love him to pieces". During their five-year relationship Coral Watson repeatedly spoke of her husband's desire to adopt her four teenage children, Robert, Kirsty-Anne, Scott and Odette. One of her children had even been involved in a "punch-up at school defending Watson to other students".
"Scott does not take responsibility for anything he does. He blames everyone else."
However, she did not regret her decision to marry Watson. "At the time I loved him more than anything else in the world." She said she would believe in his innocence until the day she died.
