Double-murderer Scott Watson has been disciplined after he allegedly attacked another inmate with a plastic chair.
Watson is serving at least 17 years in jail after being convicted of murdering Mr Smart, 21, and Ms Hope, 17, who went missing at Endeavour Inlet in the Marlborough Sounds on New Year's Day 1998.
He has always maintained his innocence.
The Press reported today quoted an unidentified inmate as saying Watson hit another prisoner over the head with a chair last week after an argument over a phone.
Department of Corrections southern region manager Paul Monk said Watson was involved in an incident with another prisoner.
"No police involvement was required. However, the prison took internal action after the incident," he told the newspaper.
In 2005 Watson was disciplined for sending photos of his genitals to a woman via a cellphone smuggled into prison.
In 2006 he was investigated for allegedly sending similar images and disturbing messages to a 15-year-old girl.
In 2004 Watson married mother-of-four Coral Branch who met after he began serving his jail term. They separated two years later amid allegations Watson was cheating on her.
