The sister of murdered farmer Scott Guy had just revealed her intention to stand for Parliament when she was told of Ewen Macdonald's arrest.
Now, Nikki Guy says she is too distressed to stand and wants to help her family through the next few months instead.
"This is a waking nightmare. For me, it's always family first."
Nikki had intended to seek the National Party nomination for the Rangitikei electorate.
She sits on the Palmerston North City Council and was seen as a credible challenger to the seat vacated by retiring Justice Minister Simon Power.
Speaking from Sydney before Macdonald's arrest, she told the Herald on Sunday she would push for tougher sentences for criminals if elected.
An hour later, she was told police had arrested her sister Anna's husband.
She and mother Jo, who had been buying clothes for their Palmerston North women's fashion store Reve, flew back the next morning but just missed Macdonald's court appearance.
