The sister of slain Feilding farmer Scott Guy says she "never, ever" thought her husband could be the killer and will stand by him until she sees some evidence.
Scott Guy was gunned down on his driveway on July 8 last year and after a nine-month police inquiry his brother-in-law, Ewen MacDonald, 30, was charged with his murder.
Defence lawyer Greg King said police have charged the wrong man and the murder is unsolved.
Anna MacDonald said yesterday she never thought her husband could be a suspect.
"I would never, ever have thought of Ewen, not once," she told One News.
She hasn't been able to speak to him since his arrest but had applied for permission to see him in Manawatu Prison.
"What the hang do you do? You just have to sit back and wait for answers ... It's almost like I'm watching someone else, but it's me."
She needed to hear the evidence against her husband before she believed he was guilty.
Mrs MacDonald walked into court last week holding the hand of Kylee, Scott Guy's widow, and said their relationship was good.
After the arrest the two women "just ran to each other" to give each other a big hug, TV3 reported.
Her children had struggled since their father's arrest. When daughter Lucy asked if she was going to jail, too, she answered: "No, I haven't done anything wrong ..." Lucy said: "If you go to jail I won't have a mum or a dad."
Mrs MacDonald said she felt constantly sick. "My heart just doesn't stop pounding."
She had been unable to sleep and was replaying conversations with her husband since the shooting.
Mrs MacDonald and Scott's father, Bryan Guy, said the family were struggling with the media attention and now wanted some privacy.
A statement from the family read: "We have expressed our thoughts about this week's events. We now wish to have some privacy to get on with family life, to support one another and allow the legal process to take its course."
A team of five police divers have been searching a waterway on Aorangi Rd - where both families live - since MacDonald's arrest on Thursday.
Police will only say the search is related to the homicide investigation.
Ewen MacDonald's parents Kerry and Marlene are standing by their son.
"As parents when your child falls over you pick them up, give them a cuddle and rub the pain away with love and kind words.
"We want to do just that, but can't in this instance, although we will always love him dearly and still feel as close to him as ever," Mr MacDonald said.
He said they were confused and bewildered and hoped to receive the full facts in the near future.
